Junk Mail: How to Stop 90% of It in One Afternoon

You spend maybe 20 minutes today. Most of the catalogs, credit offers, and promotional mail stop showing up over the following couple of months.

Where it actually goes

Almost none of it gets read. It goes from mailbox to counter to recycling bin, and the whole trip — printing, sorting, trucking, delivering — happens for something that was headed for the bin before it ever arrived. The fix isn't sorting faster. It's getting off the lists in the first place.

The four stops that cover almost everything

1

Catalog Choice 5 min

Free, nonprofit, and covers thousands of catalog senders. Register at catalogchoice.org with just your name and email, then cancel catalogs individually or in bulk.

2

OptOutPrescreen 5 min

Free and run jointly by the major credit bureaus. Go to optoutprescreen.com (or call 1-888-5-OPT-OUT) to stop prescreened credit card and insurance offers — choose the 5-year online option, or the permanent option if you're willing to mail in one form.

3

DMAchoice 5 min

A small one-time processing fee (a few dollars), but it covers the broadest category: general marketing mail, magazine offers, and donation requests, for 10 years. Register at dmachoice.org.

4

Call the stragglers directly 5 min each

For anything that keeps coming, call the toll-free number printed on the mailing and ask to be removed — quote the customer number printed near your address so they can actually find your record.

One thing none of these stop: "Every Door Direct Mail" — the flyers addressed to "Resident" or "Our Neighbors At." Those are ZIP-code blasts with no mailing list behind them, so there's no name to remove. If a piece of mail isn't addressed to you by name, there's no opt-out for it.

What the timeline actually looks like

The "afternoon" part is real — the sign-ups themselves take about 20 minutes total. The results aren't instant, though, because mailers print in batches weeks in advance.

Your Junk Mail Timeline

Today 4 sign-ups, ~20 min 30-45 Days Prescreened offers start dropping ~90 Days Catalogs & DMAchoice mail mostly stopped Ongoing Small trickle: EDDM, past purchases

Timelines vary by mailer; DMAchoice and OptOutPrescreen both note requests can take 30-90 days to take effect since mail is often printed and batched in advance.

Good enough, not perfect

You won't get your mailbox to zero — ZIP-code flyers and mail from companies you've bought from directly aren't covered by any of these. But knocking out catalogs, credit offers, and general marketing mail removes the vast majority of what was landing straight in recycling anyway.
